The Pakistan Super League is on the brink of a seismic shift, and cricket fans everywhere are buzzing with anticipation. But here's where it gets controversial: the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has just unveiled a bold overhaul, replacing the league's long-standing draft system with a player auction model—a move that's already sparking heated debates among fans and experts alike.
Since its inception in 2016, the PSL has relied on a draft system to allocate players to franchises. However, the PCB's latest reforms aim to inject fresh energy into the league. The most eye-catching change? Franchises will now bid for players in an open auction, a system that promises greater transparency and a more level playing field. And this is the part most people miss: the total franchise purse has been bumped up to a whopping USD 1.6 million, up from USD 1.3 million, giving teams more financial muscle to secure top talent.
PSL CEO Salman Naseer is confident these changes will pay dividends. "Transitioning to a player auction system will not only increase transparency but also enhance the competitive balance among teams," he explained. "It’s a win-win for everyone—players will have more earning opportunities, and fans will witness even more thrilling cricket."
But that's not all. The reforms also tweak player retention rules. Previously, franchises could retain up to eight players, including a mentor, a brand ambassador, and a 'right to match' option. Now, they can only hold onto a maximum of four players, with a strict limit of one player per category. Bold move or risky gamble? The PCB has also scrapped the roles of mentor and brand ambassador, streamlining the focus back to on-field performance.
New teams Hyderabad and Sialkot get a head start, though. They’ll be allowed to pick four players from the pool before the auction begins—a strategic advantage that could shape their debut seasons. Additionally, each franchise can directly sign one foreign player who didn’t feature in PSL 10, opening doors for fresh international talent to make their mark.
These reforms, set to debut in the league’s 11th edition, are designed to propel the PSL to new heights.
